The office working world is changing. Digitisation, start-up culture and home office requirements have accelerated the trend towards flexible working environments. New Work is the order of the day when it comes to planning and furnishing office space. Through a rather unfortunate coincidence, we were able to deal intensively with the topic from an owner-occupier perspective at the beginning of 2018 and literally let off steam.

New Work / new working environments

<h1>The creative spark</h1><h2>The office working world is changing. Start-up culture, home office constraints and video conferencing have accelerated the trend towards flexible working environments.</h2><p><br>New Work is the order of the day when it comes to planning and furnishing office space. Back in 2015, we designed and furnished the headquarters for Fit X with this in mind. Through a rather unfortunate coincidence, we were then able to deal intensively with the topic from an owner-occupier perspective at the beginning of 2018 and literally let off steam.</p><p>On the night of 1 September 2017, our office floor in the classic Ruhrpott brick industrial building went up in flames overnight. From one day to the next, all technology, documents and furnishings were irretrievably lost. After the initial shock was overcome and we moved into the temporary container, we were free to completely rethink our working environment.</p><p>We were able to redesign our workspace according to all the rules of the art and tailor it to our needs and create the conditions for contemporary working. The foundation stone for the departure into the world of New Work was laid.</p>

<h2>Work rethought - transparency and flexibility</h2><p>The result is an open-plan office for our planners and project managers with 20 modern workstations and flexible meeting zones. Individual wall panels were placed on the completely gutted floor space, and the separate offices for accounting and management were kept open and transparent with glass elements.</p><p>Common areas such as the kitchen and meeting room are grouped around the entrance and reception area and are thus visually and acoustically separated from the work area. Here, too, glass elements ensure that the space feels as spacious as possible and that maximum use is made of daylight. The reception area and a storage room behind it are merely designed as furniture without a fixed wall; changes to the room layout can therefore be made without structural intervention.</p><p>The interior design was guided by the existing building fabric. Our focus was on restoring the original industrial architecture that had been concealed in the decades before. Solid riveted steel girders and rough concrete ceilings were exposed and give the rooms an unmistakable character. A clean wall and furniture design in white and grey tones in the work areas form a contrast to the striking ceiling look and give the rough industrial charm the space it needs. Striking accents are set by the selectively used OSB surfaces and carpet tiles in the office area in two designs that create clear zoning. Some of these have been laid vertically, breaking up the usual clear demarcation between floor and wall design.</p><p>In the overall picture, rough industrial charm, clean furniture design and individual playful decorative elements - apart from the carpet tiles, the Jan Kath runner in the meeting room and the flamingo wallpaper in the kitchen are the main eye-catchers - have been successfully combined to create a harmonious and inspiring whole.</p><h2>Tradition meets innovation</h2><p>The complete deconstruction of the space due to the fire also brought with it the rare opportunity for an old building to redesign the entire equipment and technology and make it fit for the 21st century. Ergonomic workstations, height-adjustable desks, magnetic and writable walls, hybrid meeting room and different meeting points for teamwork, a 'Skype' room for undisturbed telephone calls and online meetings, state-of-the-art network technology, digital control for light rails and workplace lights...</p><p>So we were able to draw a creative and productive new beginning from the emergency situation of a burnt-out office floor. Initiated by an unfortunate coincidence, we adjusted our sails in the direction of New Work and created the appropriate space for creativity, communication and concentration for ourselves.</p>

<h1>50 Years of GLS Bank – A Celebration of Sustainability</h1><h2>In June 2024, GLS Bank—Germany's first social-ecological bank—celebrated its 50th anniversary. The climax of the celebrations took place at the beginning of June under the motto "50 Years of the Future" in the historic Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum –and Vivamo was able to contribute to the planning and design of the event.</h2><p>The highlight of the event was a sustainability fair with around 150 exhibitors and 14,000 visitors. The goal was to highlight the principles of sustainability and develop visions for the future together with partners, customers, and the public.<br>Numerous other activities took place around the fair; notable among these were the official anniversary celebration with prominent speakers such as Luisa Neubauer and the cooperative bank's annual general meeting.<br>There were also numerous workshops, panels, and lectures on the broad topic of sustainable business, as well as concerts by artists such as 2raumwohnung and an organic street food market in the forecourt of the Jahrhunderthalle.</p>

<h2>GLS Bank: Pioneer of Sustainability</h2><p>GLS Bank (Gemeinschaftsbank für Leihen und Schenken) was founded in 1974 as a cooperative, originally to finance the construction of a Waldorf school in Bochum-Langendreer – a project that no other bank wanted to support. The bank is based on anthroposophical principles and has since developed into Germany's first social-ecological bank.

Sustainability is at the heart of GLS Bank: It exclusively finances projects, companies, and economic systems that themselves pursue a sustainable approach. Topics such as renewable energy, education, housing, sustainable agriculture, and culture are central to this. Its transparency extends so far that customers can see exactly where their money is going – and yes, there's even a wooden bank card!</p>

<h2>Vivamo and GLS</h2><p>As a Bochum-based company that is also committed to GLS's sustainability goals, Vivamo has always followed the development of the local bank with great sympathy. It was an honor for us when we were first invited to work with GLS in 2017 to implement branch projects. When GLS2023 developed a new corporate design, our collaboration intensified.
Since then, Vivamo has been responsible for implementing the fresh design into the physical appearance of the bank's various locations. When the idea of ​​a sustainability fair was conceived for the celebrations of GLS's 50th anniversary, the question quickly arose as to what a stand concept would look like that would meet both GLS's communication and sustainability standards. We were happy to take on this challenge, also out of interest in the content.</p><h2>Sustainability meets trade fair construction</h2><p>When planning the exhibition hall, we faced several challenges. Even without the sustainability requirements, planning a trade fair that had never existed before and was initially only intended as a one-off event is very demanding. Added to this was a diverse exhibitor base with very different requirements regarding booth sizes and equipment – ​​which could only be acquired in parallel with the construction planning – and, last but not least, a venue with a great deal of charm, but also with many specific requirements and requirements.&nbsp;</p><h2>A hall concept with attitude</h2><p>To meet the communication and design requirements of GLS Bank, Vivamo developed a modular booth and hall concept that emphasized openness, orientation, and individuality. The hall was divided into thematic islands, connected by a clear wayfinding system. At its heart was a central GLS booth, from which the exhibition branched out in all directions. The approximately 150 booths were based on a uniform basic module, color-coded to represent the respective thematic areas – from nutrition and education to social justice.  Despite this unifying framework, the actual design was left to each exhibitor – and this freedom was impressively utilized: from pallet furniture and wooden scaffolding to banners, stickers and floor coverings, as well as illuminated light boxes. The question always remained: How can a sustainable trade fair concept be achieved? Vivamo relied on reusable systems such as the modular BeMatrix frame, cardboard wall coverings, and banners made of recycled fabric. Carpets were deliberately omitted, and power connections and storage areas were efficiently integrated. The result was a trade fair that set new standards not only in terms of content, but also in terms of design and ecology.</p><p></p>

<h2>Sustainability that works – and connects</h2><p>GLS Bank's 50th anniversary celebration wasn't a typical anniversary event – ​​it was a showcase of sustainability in action and successful collaboration. With a sophisticated trade fair concept, a diverse range of committed exhibitors, and a clear commitment to design, it demonstrated what credible communication in a spatial setting can look like.  For Vivamo, it was a project that went far beyond mere implementation. It was a contribution to an idea we share – and an opportunity to put our expertise to work for a cause with a future. The short setup time and the many details that needed to be nailed down made the project challenging – and precisely for that reason, special. <br>Our thanks go to all partners, helpers, and participants who made this trade fair possible!</p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(49, 49, 51)">In 2020, we were commissioned to give the long-established photo retailer Hamer a radical facelift. In addition to having clear ideas about a contemporary look, the new generation of the owner family also had a start-up in their portfolio, the technology rental company Gearflix, which was to be integrated into the newly designed store.</span></p><p><span style="color: rgb(49, 49, 51)">The result is quite impressive. The clear spatial layout with the self-service area at the street front ensures transparency and low thresholds. The mix of materials, including OSB, MDF, and expanded metal surfaces, combined with neon-like lighting elements and the striking ceiling sail against the raw ceiling, wall, and floor design, creates a modern space with clean lines and high design quality, without pushing the star of every store—the product—into the background.</span></p>

<p>VfL Bochum 1848 - Fanshop at the Vonovia-Ruhrstadion 2020</p><p></p><p>In the middle of the first corona lockdown, we were able to buck the trend and implement our second fan store for VfL Bochum. While almost all other shopfitting projects were put on hold at the time, all lights were turned green here thanks to the support of VfL partner Vonovia.</p><p></p><p>On the one hand, the task was to redesign the store in a contemporary and authentic way. When selecting the materials and design elements, we drew on the design of the store in Ruhrpark, which we had already designed and implemented in 2016, and continued this in an innovative and first league-compatible way. In addition to the obligatory integration of the club CD and the color blue, the material mix of raw steel, concrete surfaces and oak wood reflects the down-to-earth identity of the club as well as its tradition and roots in the industrial region of the Ruhr area.</p><p></p><p>In terms of planning, on the other hand, the aim was to divide off part of the originally larger store area to create a new reception area for the office. As a stadium fan store has to <span style="color: var(--clrSquiggleHighlightTextColor,#000000)">cope</span> with high footfall in a short space of time on the few home match days, it had to be able to handle a higher 'speed' despite the reduced sales area. This was achieved through clear routing, concentrating the product portfolio on matchday-relevant products and, last but not least, through more efficient processes, especially at the cash desk and queuing area. We have also succeeded in accommodating a close-range warehouse in the reduced space, which guarantees maximum capacity in a minimum space thanks to a mobile shelving system.&nbsp;</p>

At a time when ‘new work’ was still far from standard, all spatial and architectural criteria were already met here: open and flexible work areas, variable meeting spaces and quiet rooms, a pleasant atmosphere thanks to creative design and playful elements. Even after more than 10 years, it remains state of the art and home to a successful and expanding lifestyle company!</span></p>

<p><span style="color: rgb(49, 49, 51)">The concept stand for Swedish consumer electronics brand Urbanears at the 2018 International Radio Exhibition in Berlin was an absolute eye-catcher. The futuristic, minimalist overall design of the stand with a ‘wall of (headphone) sound’ attracted a lot of attention in itself. To top it all off, an industrial robot provided entertainment via live customization. The previously pristine white headphones were painted fully automatically during the trade fair and thus artistically individualized.</span></p>
